A sari is a garment worn by South Asian women. It consists of approximately 5.5 yards of fabric that is artfully draped over a blouse and petticoat. Just like in North America, South Asian women tire of and discard their old clothing and, luckily for us, the shape and size of those discarded saris lend themselves perfecting to up-cycling!
Up-Cycle: to reuse (discarded objects or material) in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original. In our case, we search all across India for silk saris to up-cycle into timeless, trans-seasonal clothing.
Although saris can be made in an infinite variety of silk weaves, our clothing is made from either silk crepe or sheer silk georgette or sheer silk chiffon saris. Silk crepe has natural stretchiness in the fabric due to the weave and it is opaque. It is an extremely durable fabric. Both Georgette and Chiffon saris are sheer and are more ethereal. When you see the word “sheer” in the product title, that means that that clothing piece is made of sheer georgette or chiffon silk.
Because each vintage sari consists of only 5.5 yards of fabric, we can only make about three pieces of clothing from each sari. Also, different parts of a sari have different patterns so even if there are two identical styles of clothing made from one sari, those pieces won’t be the same because the fabric patterns may be different. The limitations imposed by creating clothing from vintage silk saris ensures that your wardrobe is as one-of-a-kind as you are!
Wash your silk clothing separately in cold water by hand or in a net bag on delicate using mild detergent. Hang dry. Steam iron if desired. That’s it! No dry-cleaning needed!
First of all, we only use pre-loved fabrics in the creation of our clothing which means there is no new chemical pollution or carbon footprint from the production of our fabrics. We even use patches to fix small flaws to give our fabrics a new life.
We only use pure silk which, unlike acrylic and polyester, is a natural and fully biodegradable fibre.
Our clothing is meticulously constructed so it won’t fall apart with repeated washings.
Our clothes will fit you even if your body size changes so you don’t need to discard your clothing and buy something new.
Our designs are also versatile enough to let you style your clothes in different ways so you can wear them more often without growing tired of them.
We are extremely mindful of social injustice in the garment industry: That’s why we create our small batch clothing in partnership with a small tailoring family in Delhi. We know our tailors by name and ensure fair wages and safe work conditions.
We are a low-waste company: We use our scraps to create scrunchies, pouches, masks, gift wrap and bunting. We also strive to create zero-waste designs that use as much of the sari as possible.
Also, SariKnotSari clothing gives back in other ways. A portion of all the sales of SariKnotSari clothing is donated to the Save the Elephants Organization to help protect elephants from poachers and to conserve their grazing lands.
It’s all about the drape! South Asian saris are one-size-fits all garments which suit every body type thanks to the elegant drape of the fabric. SariKnotSari takes advantage of that delicious drape to create one-size-fits-all clothing that works for every body size and type.
We believe it’s the job of your clothing to fit you, not the other way around. Because
women’s bodies are always changing, we are proud to say that most of our designs fit from a size 2 to a size 3X--you will not outgrow these high quality garments.
We hand-pick every single sari to find colours that will match your existing basics while adding a pop of personality and colour.
The generous use of fabric in the creation of our designs allows the wearer to get creative with styling. Tie a knot here, reverse a style there, and create new looks that carry you from work to an evening out. You can even wear our silks at the beach and then to dinner afterwards! The generous cuts of our designs makes layering easy, so you can wear our silks all year long! Silk is moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating.
